Florida Indian Trial Chickee

Dugout Canoe

Canoes were made from a hollowed tree trunk, usually cypress because it was impervious to water. The tree was hollowed out by placing controlled fires in the middle of the trunk. It was a gradual process. The charred wood was removed by a scraper.
