Yaupon Holly
Ilex vomitoria

The Indians would have made a 'black drink' by boiling the leaves of the Yaupon Holly used for the Green Corn Dance. The purpose of drinking the 'black drink' was to empty the contents of the stomach in preparation for the consumption of the green corn. The principal active ingredient of Ilex vomitoria is caffeine. The act of vomiting had to be learned. Vomiting was not caused by the drink.
